Martin Luther King Day Celebration

By Dakota Rench

This past Monday we honored a man and a dream that inspired a nation to change for the betterment of equality and respect for all. This man’s name was Martin Luther King Jr. who was born on January 15, 1929, in Atlanta, Georgia.

King, both a Baptist minister and civil-rights activist, had a massive impact on race relations in the United States, beginning in the mid-1950s. Among many efforts, King headed the SCLC. Through his activism, he played a major role in ending the legal segregation of African-American citizens in the South and other areas of the nation.

On Monday the Piqua YWCA celebrated their 6th annual Martin Luther King, Jr. community event. The event was sponsored by the YWCA Racial Justice Reading Circle supported by the Upper Valley Medical Center Premier Health Partners.

Dayton, Ohio celebrated MLK day by having an annual march and rally that speaks out against racial injustice everywhere. They also held a breakfast banquet in the early morning which many people enjoyed. There were multiple rallies held all over the country, and we hope that you took time to honor this great man’s legacy.
