Australian Open Finals

Novak Djokovic won his fifth Australian Open title and his eight career grand slam while increasing Andy Murray losing record at Melbourne Park.

Djokovic beat Murray 7-6, 6-7, 6-3, 6-0 in the final early Sunday morning (3:00 AM).  Murray had lost twice previously to Djokovic in 2011 and 2013 also to Roger Federer in 2010.

NO. 1 Djokovic is a perfect 5 for 5 in Australian open finals. “There were a lot of turning points in the match,” Djokovic said after his match. “Regardless of the record I have here, we both knew we had equal chances to win.  It was a great cat-and-mouse fight; it always is with us.”

Djokovic gained the momentum he need in his service break in the eight game in the third set, winning four straight points.  When he took a 4-0 lead in the final set, he said, “I had to stay focused, but I had some breathing room to relax and just play.”

Djokovic has been accused by Murray of faking an injury early in the second set as he fell and seemed to be very hurt.  Djokovic had to take an injury time-out and then came back out moving slow.  Murray claim that the injury was just a fake to mentally psych him out, so he wouldn’t be so focused on the match.  Murray say, ‘If it was just cramps then I don’t understand why he had to take an Injury time-out.” He continues to say, “I find it surprising that he recovered so fast and came back with such vengeance.”

Djokovic said in his press conference that, “if he’s willing to talk, I’ll talk, no problem. I have nothing to hide. I’m not the sort of guy who is pretending, who is trying to do something behind anyone’s back or is saying bad things about anybody, especially about him, someone I have known for a long time.”

Whether you believe Djokovic or Murray you cannot deny that it was a fantastic match and a hard fought tournament for both players.  Murray and Djokovic both plan on competing again next year.
