The healthier option

By Claire Hilleary

In today’s world it can be hard to pass up a Chipotle bowl or burrito, some Chick-fil-A, or the even the McDonald’s dollar menu after a long and tiring day of work and school. However, without an extremely high metabolism or constantly exercising, this could all catch up to you. If you simply don’t have much time to go to the gym, try to start eating healthier options, and when it is warm outside, try to walk for at least 30 minutes or longer.  You could see some major improvements in only a month’s time.

Instead of that McDouble from McDonald’s, go home and make a toasted bagel with Colby jack, turkey and spinach, and I promise you it will not only taste better, it will make you feel better. Eating foods that are a lot less in fats, sodium, and grease will have a “detox” effect of your body. Don’t forget to drink plenty of water as well (I usually mix mine with blueberries and lemon slices) as this will also have a detoxing effect and leave you feeling light and wonderful, even if you haven’t even lost any weight yet.

Another really helpful and healthy drink to make are smoothies.  Not only they are absolutely delicious, they are the perfect breakfast drink to start-kick your metabolism and give your body the perfect amount of energy and nutrition. This smoothie will not require any added sugar or anything like that to increase fat content. I usually blend together a few strawberries and a sliced up banana, a cup of vanilla low-fat yogurt, and a little bit of fruit juice.  It tastes exactly like a McDonald’s smoothie with less than half of the calories and fat.

“Skinny Pop” pepper and sea salt or “buttery” (not really) popcorn is addicting and only 35 calories a cup and can be found at your local Kroger.

There are so many healthy yet tasty alternative foods out there if you are just willing to look. I started off eating healthy and wanting to lose tons of weight, but now I just want to live a healthy lifestyle. I still have a long way to go, but you too can feel healthier and reach your fitness goals if you replace greasy and high calorie and fat-content foods for fresh, healthy and filling foods!
