Eating Oysters is something done world wide. They are low in calories, low in fat and a good source of protein which makes you feel fuller after eating. 4. Oysters are a good source of other essential nutrients. These include vitamins A, E, and C, zinc, iron, calcium, selenium, and vitamin B12.

But here is so cool/ disturbing news you may not have known…. THEY ARE ALIVE!! That’s right Oysters must be eaten alive, or cooked alive. The shells of live oysters are usually tightly closed or snap shut given a slight tap. If the shell is open, the oyster is dead, and cannot be eaten safely. Cooking oysters in the shell kills the oysters and causes them to open by themselves.Although oysters are alive when being eaten they are less likely to feel any pain. Here’s the deal. Unless they’re cooked, eating dead oysters can actually make you very, very sick! Oysters do not have a central nervous system, making us believe they’re unlikely to experience pain in a way resembling ours. recommends tapping the shell lightly with your finger. “If the shell closes, the animal is alive and safe to buy. If the shell is gaping open or does not close after tapping it, the animal is dead and may harbour high numbers of bacteria which can make you ill,” the site says.
